Dollar Tree IS a good company to work for, but I'll break itdown for those who are really considering a job with the company(whether it be cashier, stocker, assistant manager, store manager, and on up..).. Myself being a store manager for the company for 5years, I can give you quite a bit of info..
Your training to use a cash register should not only involve physically working the machine but also in cash security and attention to detail. Setting Up the Register. Set up the machine before beginning your shift. Begin by counting down your drawer. Every cash drawer should have a set amount of cash and coins to be used to make change. After you press the amount of payment, and there probably will be a cash, check, or debit button.the drawer will come open and you put their cash in the register. The register will show you how much change to give back. It's all simple. Besides.Dollar Tree.almost everything's a dollar right?.
Dollar Tree has an awesome benefits package.. Health, dental, vision, life insurance can all be given to an employee at a veryreasonable price.. Their 401k is AWESOME!! The company will matchup to 5% and that is 100% vested.. Almost unheard of now-a-days..Management level and up are automatically enrolled in the company'sProfit Sharing program.. A store manager can expect to makeanywhere from $750-$2,000 a year from that alone.. If you invest4-5% of your paycheck into your 401k, you can build up quite theammount, believe me I speak from experience.. Sick Time andVacation Time is of course something you gain more of as you staywith the company, but for example, an Assistant Manager that ishired from outside the company would receive 1 week of vacationafter working for the company 1 year. After 2 years of employementyou receive 2 weeks of vacation (PTO), and 3 weeks when you reachthe 3 year mark.. They automatically receive 1 week of sick pay theminute they are hired, as long as it is a management position. Those aspects of the company make it one of the best companies I'veever worked for..
If you are looking at being a cashier with the company, beprepared to be paid close to if not mininum wage and expect yourentire work shift to be very fast paced (minus breaks and/orlunches of course.).. Most Dollar Tree stores on average will have2-3 associates inside the store at one time that can run theregister. That being said, your bound to deal with customers angryabout waiting in line as well as possibly managers and othercashiers being rude about having to come up front and help you out.Depending on the store manager/assistant managers, you will begiven ample training before you are just 'thrown to the wolves' soto speak. It's not a hard position, but you have to be highlymotivated and want to help out the management team and the companyin general. This job would include running the cash register, cleaning the store, stocking the shelves, unloading the truck, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, etc.. Dollar Tree is a company thathas a TON of opportunity for advancement. The turnover rate isdeclining, but it is still very high in terms of companyaverages..
Stocking positions very by store. Some of the smaller DollarTree stores may not have any stockers at all, and there are somethey might have anywhere up to 5 stockers, but on average eachstore has somewhere around 1-2 stockers. This would be more driventowards only unloading the truck, and stocking the shelves. Goodposition for someone that likes to keep busy their entire shift...Not good for someone that has trouble getting around, troublelifting heavy boxes, or someone that just isn't a motivatedperson.. You won't last long with the company.. Believe me, DollarTree is very fast paced and extremely stressful sometimes..
The company pushes for their cashiers/stockers to only workbetween 15-20 hours per week.. So if your wanting a full-timeposition as a cashier/stockers and your not wanting to move up anyfurther, Dollar Tree is not the company for you..
Rarely will Dollar Tree hire a person off the street to be astore manager (or atleast they've made a big push on it the lastcouple years.) So chances are if you don't get hired as acashier/stocker, you're going to be hired as an Assistant Manager..On average, you will probably make anywhere between $8-$11 per outto start.. This is a tough position to have in my opinion, becausetheir is a lot that is expected of you.. Keep in mind, that'sasuming the store manager/district manager cares about the storeand puts in the time to make sure the store runs to the best ofit's ability sales wise.. Assistant Managers can really learn a lotif they are around a good Store Manager, District Manager, OtherAssistant Managers, and even other cashiers/stockers.. I believealmost 75% of all Store Manager promotions are coming from withinthe company at this point.. The company is growing quickly, plusthe high turnover rate, equals a lot of job openings everyday..
You can make it as far as you want to with the company, you justhave to factor in how long it is going to take and if your willingto put that time into it.. Like I said, and asssitant manager isgoing to make around $8-$11 per hour and it might take 2-3 years tobecome a store manager, where at that point you'd be makingsomewhere around $40k per year, probably around $35k in mostcases... Dollar Tree is a great company, but as with any company, you have to deal with the ticky tacky rules and guidlines they setforth for each store and even each associate.. There's always goingto be something that comes up or is asked of you that you might notneccessarily agree with, but you have to be able to just 'roll withit'.. That's what I tell my assistant managers, because if you letall the little things that are bad about retail job positions, youcan make your experience at work just completely horrible and itcan even rub off on your life outside of work...
No matter what position, my suggestion is to evaluate how youfeel about the company after 3-6 months.. Really try to askyourself if you can see yourself with the company a year from nowand happy.. If you feel that is almost impossible, it's probablytime to get out.. Retail is not for everybody.. It's a fast pacedenvironment, you have to deal with rude customers, your asked to do10 hours of work in 5 hours.. It's just Retail... simply put...Someone has to be behind the counter checking you out when you buyyour consumbles and anything else at any store.. Likewise, someonehas to be on the 'front line', running the store (managementteam).. It's just a matter of if you want to be one of thosepeople.. Retail is not easy, but for a driven person that is highlymotivated, it can be just what your looking for..
Hope this helps anyone...
